From Kitchen Experiments to Scheels Shelves: The Story of Scent of Home
Scent of Home began with one simple goal — to bring comfort and warmth to every space through clean, hand-poured candles made in Idaho.
When I first started pouring candles, I didn’t know it would turn into what it is today. It all began the Christmas my husband bought me a candle-making kit. At the time, I was constantly searching for new business ideas — not just because I wanted something to do, but because I was trying to find myself again.
Being a stay-at-home mom is the most amazing thing I could have ever asked for, but somewhere in the midst of raising little ones, I started to lose a bit of my own identity. I wanted something that felt like mine — something creative, something purposeful — and candle making became that space for me.
So I started small, right in our kitchen. I’d melt wax on the stove and test new fragrance blends while the kids napped. Soon, our dining table was covered in jars, wicks, and thermometers. Before long, there wasn’t any room left for family dinners — so we moved everything out to the garage and built what would become our first “studio.”
That’s where things really started to take shape. I spent hours tracking down suppliers I could trust, testing wicks and wax blends, designing labels, and building something from scratch that felt true to who I was and what I loved.
Our first big break came in a way I never expected — through family. My cousin happened to mention our candles to someone at Scheels right after the store opened, asking if they ever carried local makers. That single conversation turned into nearly a year of back-and-forth before we finally got the green light to test our products in two stores.
That opportunity taught us so much. We had to learn how to scale production, package and ship large orders, and manage inventory — all while still hand-pouring every single candle. It pushed our limits and forced us to create real systems and processes. But it also showed us what we were capable of.
Looking back, it’s hard to believe how far we’ve come — from that first candle kit to shelves in Scheels and homes across the country. But through it all, one thing has stayed the same: every candle we make is poured with intention, love, and the hope that it brings comfort into someone’s home.
Because that’s what Scent of Home has always been about — creating something beautiful and meaningful, one candle at a time.
